Photo Album – Emily’s House Garden and Outdoor Greenspace Upgrades – Project Completion:
As funded by the Emily’s House Celebrates “Where Love Lives” a Gala at Casa Loma event of 2017

The Emily’s House Garden and Outdoor Greenspace Upgrades are finally complete. Thank you, again, to the volunteer committee, corporate sponsors and patrons who supported Emily’s House through the 2017 gala event: Emily’s House Celebrates “Where Love Lives” a Gala at Casa Loma. The gala fully-funded this vital project, as well as Days of Care at Emily’s House.

People in the community stop by to comment on the beauty of the garden and are inadvertently learning about the hospice care going on at Emily’s House. According to our front-line care team, neighbours, dog-walkers and folks in the neighbourhood stop by to comment on the bright floral flourish, full-bloom flower beds, and the sections of thick green privacy that create a parameter around our property.

Wind chimes, benches, and privacy alcoves have been installed, and enjoyed by our families, particularly those in the end-of-life suites at the back of house on the first floor. The walk-out veranda overlooking the garden is often where these families spend valuable quiet time together.

Respite families have been “blown away” by the beauty of the garden, commenting that it is: “A peaceful space in nature, in the heart of the city, after listening to the hectic noise, and medical beeps of a hospital environment.” More and more families are wanting to be out in the garden, or are spending time in the garden. Respite families want to book respite time in the garden, but, of course, priority goes to families whose children have been admitted for end-of-life care.

Due to basement flooding and roofing repairs, there were a series of major delays in the completion of the Emily’s House Garden and Outdoor Greenspace Upgrades by our in-house landscape and maintenance team. During the delays, the work was compartmentalized and staggered so that there was always a generous section of yard and outdoor play area for kids in our care, especially during our action-packed, full-house for Emily’s House Summer Camp sessions.

The west garden has significantly extended the wheelchair-accessible space for play, recreation and respite activities. The larger space available means that while the north garden is occupied by a family on an advanced care trajectory, seeking peace and beauty, other outdoor activities can be happening simultaneously in the west garden. Our Recreational Program team is thrilled to have the extra space from the expansion, and more options for programming and activities with our kids.
